James Henderson is the owner and operator of The Cognitive Cat, LLC, a behavioral service, specializing in enhancing understanding, communication and relationship between cats and people.
Behavioral misunderstandings occur in many contexts and scenarios, including: urinating and defecating outside of the litter box, scratching inappropriate surfaces, aggressive behaviors directed towards humans or other species, introductions to all species, medication administration in all forms and helping to figure out those little quirks cats get up to, from counter-surfing to attacking slumbering feet at 3 AM.
James is a proponent of understanding cats through observing behavior and applying a reinforcement-based approach to create behavioral realities that can replace current challenges or behavioral misunderstandings. This process allows for the creation of new possibilities for both cats and people through offering choice and control and increasing trust and relationship between cats and people.
A graduate of the, Companion Animal Sciences Institute, James has over 3,000 hours working with cats in shelter/rescue settings and private residences. James is a passionate supporter of TNR and working toward a no-euthanasia nation (and then world). Besides working as a behavior consultant, he primarily focuses on cooperative care, the power of play followed by scheduled feedings, communicating with clicker training and arranging ways to offer more species appropriate outlets and engagement for the cats in our lives.
James lives in Rochester, NY with his amazing clowder of Durga & Poe and works as a registered nurse in his day job.
